Looking for a new way to get your kids to talk about their feelings and experiences? Want to get more than the traditional “Fine” answer when asking “How was school?”
Try Question Cookies–a Sweet way to get them talking!
-
Have a plate of homemade cookies waiting for them as they come home.
-
Attach a question to each cookie
-
Enjoy hearing their responses as they describe their world.
Some open-ended questions to consider are:
-
Tell me about the best part of your day.
-
What was one of the hardest things you did today?
-
Who did you play with today? What did you play?
-
What did your class read today?
-
What activities did you choose at table time?
-
Tell me something you learned today.
-
Is today better or worse than yesterday? Why?
Open-ended questions elicit more than a one-word response. Their answers to these kinds of question will help you discover their world.
I came up with this idea with my 4-year old preschooler, who I could tell was going to have a rough day. It was a fun and open-ended way to learn about his day, experiences, and feelings.

Some potty advice
People ask if I would ever get a pet dog, and I look at them dumbfounded...Why would I ever get a dog and willingly clean up more accidents when I have ENOUGH potty training trouble as it is? Clearly, I don't understand the joys of a dog, they say. Clearly...
Tools for the Emergent Reader
So many times over the years I have been asked how my kids have started reading so soon. Each of my kids learned to read when they were 3 or 4. Not startling at all for some, but an overwhelming achievement for many. But, here at home, it was no biggie. Th...
Birth the Natural (And Relaxed) Way
There are two ways to give birth: medically or naturally. For women with high risk, thank goodness for doctors and numbing medicine, but they both have their place.
For my last three children, I have chosen the natural route, and I would like to share why...
About Kerri
Ahh…see that smile on my face? That’s a genuine smile. I love my family. I love the 4th of July. I love the beach. I love ice-cream. And the day this picture was taken, I was getting the combination of it all. Ahhh…that’s a real smile!
This is a great idea! We also play “Low, High” at dinner. This idea is stolen (and modified) from the movie The Story of Us (not a kid movie). We go around the table telling the “low” and the “high” points of our day. We get 2 stories from each child this way. Sometimes the stories spark conversation. Also, an added benefit is that, since we started this tradition, our children regularly ask my husband and I about our days. That feels really good!
Great idea!! Can’t wait to use it!
